Negative pronouns in German are used to express negation or absence of something, replacing or referring to nouns in a negative context.
Example:
- Ich sehe niemanden im Park. (I see nobody in the park.) - negative pronoun referring to people
- Von allen Geschenken gefällt mir keines. (Of all the gifts, I like none of them.) - negative pronoun showing complete exclusion
Basic Negative Pronouns
Here are the main negative pronouns in German:

Declension of Negative Pronouns
Negative pronouns change their endings based on gender, number, and case. Here's how keiner is declined:

The declension pattern of niemand is not influenced by grammatical gender! This is because niemand is a fixed-gender-neutral negative pronoun.
Nominative Case
- In der Klasse hat keiner die Antwort gewusst. (Nobody in class knew the answer.)
- Auf der Party war niemand, den ich kannte. (No one at the party was someone I knew.)
Accusative Case
- Sie liebt keinen von ihnen. (She loves none of them.)
- Ich sehe niemanden auf der Straße. (I see nobody on the street.)
Dative Case
- Mit keinem von ihnen will ich sprechen. (I don't want to speak with any of them.)
- Er hat niemandem davon erzählt. (He didn't tell anyone about it.)
Genitive Case
- Die Schuld keines Schülers wurde bewiesen. (The guilt of none of the students was proven.)
- Er erinnerte sich niemandes Namen. (He remembered nobody's name.)
Using Negative Pronouns in Questions
- Hat niemand angerufen? (Did nobody call?)
- Keiner davon funktioniert richtig. (None of them works properly.)
