The imperative mood (Imperativ) is used to give commands, instructions, or make requests.
German has three different imperative forms depending on who you're addressing:
- du (informal singular)
- ihr (informal plural)
- Sie (formal singular/plural).
Formation of the Imperative
Du-Form (Informal Singular)
For most verbs, take the verb stem and add -e (though the -e is often dropped):

Special Cases for Du-Form:
- Strong/Irregular verbs with stem-vowel change e→i or e→ie: Keep the vowel change, never add -e
- geben (to give) → Gib mir das Buch
- lesen (to read) → Lies den Text
- nehmen (to take) → Nimm einen Apfel
- sprechen (to speak) → Sprich langsamer
- Verbs whose stem ends in -t, -d, -m, -n: Must keep the -e
- arbeiten (to work) → Arbeite fleißig (Work diligently!)
- öffnen (to open) → Öffne die Tür (Open the door!)
Ihr-Form (Informal Plural)
The ihr-imperative is identical to the present tense ihr-form, but without the pronoun:

Sie-Form (Formal Singular/Plural)
The Sie-imperative is formed using the present tense Sie-form, but with inverted word order (verb + Sie):

Irregular Imperatives
sein (to be) has a irregular formation in imperative and must be memorized separately.

Imperative with Separable Verbs
With separable verbs, the prefix separates and moves to the end of the command:
- Steh bitte früh auf.
- Ruf mich morgen an.
- Macht die Tür zu.
Negative Commands
To form negative commands, simply add "nicht" after the verb or at the end of the sentence:
- Geh nicht zu schnell.
- Macht das nicht.
- Vergessen Sie das nicht.
- Sprich nicht so laut.
Polite Requests and Softening Commands
To make commands more polite, you can add words like bitte (please), doch (emphasizing encouragement), or mal (softening the command):
- Bitte warte einen Moment. (Please wait a moment!)
- Komm doch mit. (Do come along!)
- Hilf mir mal. (Help me, will you?)
- Sag mal, wie geht's dir. (Tell me, how are you?)
